WE'RE HEADING TO ROME! The Story Of a Virtual Trip,

Hello All!

This week's topic to discuss is use of AR and VR materials in language classes. Let's explain these first, Augmented Reality (AR) adds digital elements (images, words etc.) to the real world through devices like smartphones or tablets. Virtual Reality (VR) makes you feel like you’re in a different world, like a game or a movie. You wear a headset to see and explore it. Like in everyting, these also have both advantages and disadvantages. Examples to advantages can be, engaging students with interactive visuals and provding immersive language practice in lifelike contexts. Both require costly equipment and technical support and since it is so expensive only some students or schools can access them and these are the disadvantages. 


Our task for this week to implement AR and VR to a lesson. We prepared a digital worksheet you can see the link below. In the worksheet we chose a city - which is Rome- and guided students to explore Rome. We introduced 2 landmarks and a museum of Rome. They were, The Collesium and The Pisa tower. For the museum we chose "Capitoline Museum" and we also introduced a famous dish which was "Lasagna". Preparing this digital worksheet was easy and entertaining. I also learned a new thing. I learned about "Capitoline Museum" and it is truly a fascinating one. We worked in a group of four as usual. My groupmates were Almina, Nilüfer and Sude. It was hard to find 3D objects but 360 videos were easier to find so we used videos. 

The use of AR and VR in a language class can be an unforgettable experience if we can afford it. It could be motivating for students. It would catch their interest and they would engage in a class more. If only it would be more accesible for people. Teachers could make a good use of it.
